Implantology in Diever

What is an implant?
An implant is an artificial root that the dentist places in the jawbone. After a few months it has fused with the bone. Then a crown, a bridge or an implant-retained denture can be fitted on it.
A missing tooth or molar is more than a gap. You chew less well, neighbouring teeth can start to tilt and the rest of your teeth carry more load. That is why we look at the whole: bone, gums, bite and the crown that will eventually go on top.

When it is a good idea and when it is not
An implant is not always the wisest choice. You will hear that from us too, together with the alternatives.
An implant can be suitable for
- One missing tooth or molar. The neighbouring teeth do not need to be ground down.
- Several missing teeth, as support for a bridge.
- A loose denture in a toothless jaw.
- A tooth or molar that cannot be saved.
What we look at during the examination
- Is there enough jawbone of good quality?
- Are your gums healthy and can you keep everything clean?
- Do you smoke, take medication or have a condition that affects healing?
- What do you expect from it and is that realistic?
Your treatment in six steps
The process differs from person to person. We discuss it with you beforehand, so that you know what happens at every step.
Intake and examination
We discuss your question, health and wishes and examine your teeth and jaw.
Treatment plan and estimate
Using X-ray images we draw up a plan. You receive the steps, alternatives, risks and costs in writing.
Placement
We place the implant under local anaesthetic in the practice.
Healing
The implant fuses with the bone. That usually takes a few months. Where needed you get a temporary solution.
Crown, bridge or denture
Dentist and technician agree shape, colour and fit together.
Check-ups and maintenance
Good brushing and regular check-ups determine how long an implant lasts.
Implant crown
Replaces one tooth or molar. A crown in the shape and colour of your own teeth is fitted onto the implant. The neighbouring teeth stay intact. Because the lab is in-house, we can adjust colour and fit directly.
Implant-retained denture
A denture that clicks onto implants. You have more hold when eating and speaking. For a toothless jaw the Dutch basic health insurance covers this under certain conditions. We apply for the authorisation for you.

When is an implant a good choice?
An implant can be suitable if you are missing a tooth or molar, or if a tooth cannot be saved. Whether it is wise in your case depends on your jawbone, gums, health and oral hygiene. We assess that during the intake.
Does placing an implant hurt?
You get a local anaesthetic, just as with a filling. Afterwards you may have some pain or swelling for a few days. You receive instructions and advice on pain relief beforehand.
How long does the whole process take?
That varies from person to person. After placement the implant has to fuse with the bone. That usually takes a few months. Then we make the crown, bridge or denture. We discuss the schedule with you beforehand.
What are the risks?
Every procedure carries risks. With an implant these are mainly bleeding afterwards, an infection or an implant that does not fuse properly. Smoking, some medicines and poor oral hygiene increase that chance. We discuss this during the intake.
What are the alternatives?
A bridge, a partial denture or doing nothing. We set out the pros and cons side by side so that you can choose.
How do I look after an implant?
Just like your own teeth: brush twice a day and clean between the teeth daily. At the check-up we inspect the implant and the gum around it.
Is an implant covered by insurance?
That depends on your situation and your insurance. Implants for an implant-retained denture in a toothless jaw are covered by the Dutch basic health insurance under certain conditions. Other implants usually fall under supplementary dental insurance or are paid by you. You receive an estimate beforehand.
Are you a dentist who wants to refer?
You can refer a patient to us specifically for implantology. We agree beforehand which part we do. Afterwards you receive a report and the patient returns to you.
